Top journalist calls out French Tennis Federation for ‘Absolute non sense’ as Dominic Thiem misses out on a Roland Garros wild card in his final season on tour

Austria’s Dominic Thiem has announced his retirement recently and will play his last match at a home event in Vienna. He did not get the wild card to enter the upcoming Roland Garros and this angered French journalist Jose Morgado who called out the French Tennis Federation.

Other notable names, who won Grand Slam titles, like Emma Raducanu, Caroline Wozniacki, and Simona Halep also did not get it. What frustrated Morgado was the fact that Thiem won’t get the chance to play despite this season being his last one.

I’m sorry, but Thiem’s case is absolutely unforgivable. Absolute non sense from the French Tennis Federation. Jose Morgado wrote on X

Here’s his post:

Roland Garros will start on May 20th, with the main draw scheduled to start on May 26th. Thiem has reached the Roland Garros finals two times, in 2018 and 2019. He lost both the finals to 14-time Roland Garros winner Rafael Nadal

Dominic Thiem announced his retirement through a video

A few days ago, Dominic Thiem took to Instagram to upload a video announcing his retirement. Thiem is 30 and the major reason behind his retirement is his wrist injury. While announcing his retirement, he blamed the injury that forced him to hang up his racket.

My wrist is not exactly the way it should be. It is not exactly the way I want it. The second reason is my inner feelings. I was thinking about this decision for a very long time. I was thinking very carefully about it. I was thinking about my whole tennis journey, which has been incredible. Dominic Thiem said

Apart from the 2018 and 2019 French Open finals, the 30-year-old also made it to the 2020 Australian Open final but lost the match to current World No.1 Novak Djokovic.

Thiem finally won his first Grand Slam title when he defeated Germany’s Alexander Zverev in the 2020 Australian Open final. The Austrian was two sets down, but he made a terrific comeback to take home the trophy with a scoreline of 2-6, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 7-6.

Thiem last played in Madrid in its qualifiers and couldn’t make it to the main draws. He is 2-4 for the season and currently stands at No.117 in the ATP Rankings. In total, Thiem has lifted 17 titles on the ATP Tour and reached his best in the rankings when he became World No. 3 in 2020.
